Košice – reconstruction of weir Vyšné Opátske

Last week Chemkostav, a.s. Michalovce participated on ceremonial take over " Košice – reconstruction of weir Vyšné Opátske". Contract for work was signed on 22nd of April 2015, with Slovenský vodohospodársky podnik (Slovak water management company), Banská Štiavnica. All works will be cofinanced by Cohesion Fund EU and State budget, Operational Programme Environment, Priority ax 2 Flood protection.

Water structure is situated on south from Košice, under the city district Vyšné Opátske. It was build as part of Hornád river adjustments, to improve water management relations in river basin. It secures backwater level of river above the weir for consumption of water for US STEEL Košice and for production of electricity. At the same time it allows to use area around waterworks for recreation. Building objects are in condition of 50 years old operation, during which there was regular maintance. Till today there hasn’t been made complete recovery of facilities. Project includes reconstruction building parts of weir, rehabilitation of concrete structures and exchange of technological equipment. Works will be performed in the area under the of temporary protection.

The purpose of building is to ensure the required capacity of weir during floods. Reconstruction of weir will lead to increase of flood protection in the area of 60 ha, what includes also part of Košice.
